Dr. Nathan Herrmann- New Lewar Chair in Geriatric Psychiatry
Please join us in congratulating Dr. Nathan Herrmann as the new Lewar Chair in Geriatric Psychiatry. The prestigious Lewar Term Chair is a joint University of Toronto/Sunnybrook position dedicated to supporting excellence in geriatric psychiatry at Sunnybrook with a particular focus on mood disorders and neurodegenerative disorders of late life. Dr. Ken Shulman was the inaugural Lewar Chair and successfully completed a highly productive 13 years in this position.
Dr. Herrmann is a Professor in the Department of Psychiatry and has already held a number of important leadership roles. He was the Head of the University of Toronto Geriatric Psychiatry Division from 1995-2005. At Sunnybrook he is Head of the Division of Geriatric Psychiatry, and a scientist in the Hurvitz Brain Sciences Program and Canadian Partnership for Stroke Recovery.
Dr. Herrmann is an outstanding teacher and lecturer but without question his major academic reputation is for his impactful research. Dr. Herrmann’s major contributions to research are in the areas of the clinical pharmacology of dementia (treatment of behavioural disturbances and cognition), post-stroke depression and the pharmacotherapy of late-life affective disorders. He has published several studies on the pharmacotherapy of behavioural disturbances in dementia. Many of these studies involve the use of novel agents and attempt to determine the underlying neurobiology of these disorders. He has also participated in studies of post-stroke depression, examining its neuroimaging and biological correlates. In addition, Dr. Herrmann has published studies, reviews and guidelines on the management of depression and bipolar disorder in late life, and he has participated in psychopharmacology projects on drug-drug interactions and adverse events.
We will be honouring and celebrating Dr. Herrmann within the next month by holding an afternoon wine and cheese event at Sunnybrook HealtH Sciences Center. Please make sure to mark your calendars whem the upcoming date and time are confirmed.
At this point, please join us in congratulating Nathan on this very exciting achievement!
